The KZN South Coast does the sundowner better than almost anywhere in South Africa. The light here turns a particular shade of amber before it dips below the Indian Ocean horizon — the kind that makes every glass look like it belongs in a photograph, and every conversation feel like it has nowhere else to be. If you haven't made a ritual of it, you're missing one of the best things this coastline has to offer.
What makes a great sundowner spot?
Not every view qualifies. A great sundowner spot has a few things in common: the light has to reach you, which means facing west or somewhere the sky opens up; there needs to be somewhere comfortable to sit; the drinks have to be cold and the bar well-stocked; and the food — even if it's just something small — has to be worth ordering. The best spots also have an atmosphere that slows you down, that makes you stay for another drink rather than moving on. That quality is rare, and it's almost always the result of the place itself rather than any particular effort on the part of whoever runs it.
Zizi's at Umdlalo Lodge — Sundowners by the Firepit
There is a moment every evening at Zizi's, somewhere around 4:30pm, when the garden shifts. The light that comes through the trees takes on a warmth that's particular to the late KZN afternoon — softer than midday, longer than you expect — and the two firepits begin their slow performance of crackling into life as the staff tend to them before the evening rush. If you are sitting with a drink in your hand when this happens, you will not want to leave.
The Zizi's garden at Umdlalo Lodge is one of the genuinely beautiful outdoor spaces on the South Coast. Landscaped and mature, it has the kind of depth that manicured hotel gardens lack — there are spots here that feel like you've found something private, even when the restaurant is busy. The firepits anchor the evening experience. As the air cools off the ocean — and even in the warm months there's usually a softening of the heat by five o'clock — the fire draws people in without any effort at all.
The bar at Zizi's is fully stocked and properly run. Cold beers, a good wine list, cocktails that are made properly rather than hastily. The kitchen is open, so if a sundowner turns into dinner — and it usually does — you have Chef Dillon Naicker's full menu at your disposal: wood-fired pizza, fresh seafood, everything that makes this part of the coast worth visiting in the first place. The smell of the kitchen drifting over the garden as the evening settles is its own kind of hospitality.
The lodge itself is a five-minute walk from Umtentweni beach. Some people walk the beach first, catch the last of the light at the shoreline, then make their way up to Zizi's for the firepits and a drink as the evening turns. It is an excellent way to structure an afternoon.
The firepits come alive as the evening cools. The bar is open, the kitchen is humming, and there is nowhere else on the South Coast quite like this in the hour before dinner.
The beach at Umtentweni
Before or after Zizi's, the beach at Umtentweni deserves its moment. It's a five-minute walk from the restaurant — quiet, local, and far enough from the main holiday strips to feel like you've found something unspoiled. The light over the water in the late afternoon is worth standing still for. It makes a natural first act to the Zizi's sundowner experience: beach to the firepits, ocean to the fire.
Other moments worth chasing on the South Coast
The South Coast has a generosity of golden-hour moments if you know where to look. The Marine Drive between Shelly Beach and Margate runs high above the coastline with views that open up dramatically at the right time of day — if you're driving between towns in the late afternoon, pull over when the light looks right and give it a minute. You won't regret it.
The Margate beachfront is reliably beautiful at golden hour, with the long sweep of the beach turning amber and the surf catching the light in a way that's worth a photograph. It's more active than the Umtentweni beach — families, surfers, dog walkers — which gives it a different kind of energy, equally worth experiencing on the right evening.
How to make the most of your South Coast sundowner
- Arrive by 4:30–5pm to catch the best of the light before it dips below the treeline. The golden hour here is real — don't arrive after it's already peaked.
- Order something small from the kitchen alongside your first drink. A sunset tastes better with something to eat, and the Zizi's menu makes this easy.
- Stay for the firepits. They really do come alive as the evening cools, and the garden at Zizi's transitions beautifully from a sundowner spot into a dinner setting. Many evenings that begin with one drink end three hours later.
- Walk-ins are welcome at Zizi's — but if you're arriving in a group for a weekend sundowner, a quick call ahead means we can have the right spot ready for you.
Danny will have saved you a spot by the fire. He's very serious about his hosting responsibilities and he's been known to hold a prime fireside position for up to two hours if a particularly promising guest is on the way. Come find him in the garden.
